The tech world converged in Berlin for the highly anticipated WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2023, a gathering that showcased the cutting edge of innovation and brought together over 12,000 attendees and 500 prominent speakers. The event kicked off with a visionary address by none other than Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the pioneer behind the World Wide Web, who unveiled his ambitious blueprint for the future evolution of the digital landscape.

Among the remarkable announcements was StackOverflow's revelation of their groundbreaking AI tool, "OverflowAI" set to revolutionize coding practices. Gaming enthusiasts were treated to a captivating journey through history as legendary designer John Romero unveiled his gripping biography "Doom Guy", offering insights into the making of one of the most iconic video games of all time. As the excitement soared, WeAreDevelopers introduced a monumental shift in the coding realm with the launch of the world's first live coding championship, CODE100, underscoring their commitment to pushing the boundaries of technological prowess. This year's congress proved to be a spectacular testament to the inexhaustible drive of the developer community and the limitless possibilities that lie ahead.

At the WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2023 on July 27 and 28, software developers and tech decision makers from around the world met in Berlin to discuss the latest trends and innovations of the industry. During the two congress days, the organizers welcomed more than 12,000 visitors to Messe Berlin. True to the motto "Shaping the Future. Together." more than 500 speakers gave two days of presentations on software development, digitization and the impact of AI on our future.

The conference was opened by the inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Ranked among the 100 most influential personalities of the 20th century by TIME Magazine, the British physicist primarily advocated decentralized concepts for further development of the web in his keynote. Berners-Lee presented his vision of artifical intelligence, Web 3.0 and proposals on how the privacy of users can be protected from big tech companies' interests in their data.

Stack Overflow: World premiere of AI tool "OverflowAI"

Prashanth Chandrasekar, Chief Executive Officer at Stack Overflow, unveiled OverflowAI on Thursday. It is expected that the use of OverflowAI will lead to a significant increase in productivity in software development. "There is no doubt that with widespread access to GenAI tools that code will be created more quickly and the volume is likely to explode with code completion tools and the need for trust in their output will only increase for developers. Our goal with OverflowAI is to ensure developers are not only contributing to the foundation of what GenAI is today, they are also an integral part of building its future. Developers and technologists should take pride and ownership in knowing that community is the future of AI.", Chandrasekar said at Stack Overflow's announcement in front of a fully packed auditorium.

Gaming legend John Romero inspires with biography "Doom Guy"

A special highlight for the visitors was gaming legend John Romero, who presented his new biography "Doom Guy: Life in First Person". John Romero is one of the most successful game designers in the world (Doom, Wolfenstein 3D) and is considered the father of the first-person shooter genre.

Refactoring the web

The Internet revolutionized our communication and information exchange, but it lacks an identity layer. This results in data insecurity, requiring numerous log-ins and trusting third-party custodians. What if we could control our own data, including identity, content, and preferences?

Angie Jones, Java Champion and Global Vice President of Developer Relations for TBD, Block’s new business unit focused on decentralized technologies, introduced Web5, an open-source decentralized web platform. It returns data control to individuals by adding a new web layer for decentralized apps and protocols. This simplifies decentralization complexity, freeing developers to drive web innovation.

As this platform -web5- is in a tech preview its progress can be watched at the following web address.

The date for the WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2024 has already been set (18.-19.07.2024), and we are sure that it will bring us new surprises from the world of software development.

Our thanks to Clemens Bauer and Benedikt Bischof from WeAreDevelopers GmbH for giving us the necessary support for the coverage of this great event.
